Corrosion-Resistant GRP Covers at Sandown STW

In the demanding environment of Wastewater Treatment Works (STW), infrastructure longevity is constantly challenged by corrosive elements. A recent project at Sandown STW on the Isle of Wight serves as a prime example of how modern GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) solutions are replacing traditional materials to provide safer, more durable outcomes.

Working alongside Unitspark Ltd for Southern Water, Corporate Engineering was tasked with a critical upgrade of the site's main Inlet Works chamber.

The Challenge: Combatting Hydrogen Sulphide Corrosion

The original installation at Sandown utilized Galvanized Mild Steel (GMS) chequer-plate panels supported by GMS beams. Over time, the high concentrations of Hydrogen Sulphide ($H_2S$)—a common but aggressive gas in wastewater treatment—had severely compromised the structural integrity of the steel.

The result was heavily corroded panels and supports that were no longer fit for purpose. Southern Water required a solution that would:

  • Effectively contain odours.

  • Provide safe, reliable access to the inlet penstocks.

  • Withstand the corrosive atmosphere long-term.

The Solution: High-Performance Corrosion-Resistant GRP Covers

Corporate Engineering was contracted to decommission the failing steelwork and design, supply, and install a bespoke GRP cover system.

One of the primary advantages of our GRP solution is its inherent corrosion resistance. Unlike steel, Corrosion-Resistant GRP Covers do not oxidise or degrade when exposed to H2S, making it the ideal material for inlet chambers.

Key features of the new installation include:

  • Self-Supporting Design: The new covers span the chamber walls without the need for additional internal steel supports, eliminating future points of structural failure.

  • Load Bearing Capacity: Designed to support an imposed load of 5kN/m², ensuring the area is safe for general pedestrian access.

  • Safety & Access: The covers feature a slip-deterrent surface and are integrated with sealed inspection hatches, allowing operators to monitor penstocks without compromising odour control.

  • Live Installation: To maintain site operations, the entire removal and installation process was successfully executed while the chamber remained live.
